"Mankind Is Obsolete," also known as "MKIO," is a female-fronted industrial rock band based in Los Angeles, California. The group was formed in fall 2002 by founding members Jon Siren (drums) and Natasha Cox (vocals). Jon had recently relocated to L.A. from Columbus, Ohio to join the legendary So Cal industrial group Hate Dept., while Natasha had moved from a small town in Texas to pursue a heavier style of music than the classical piano her parents had encouraged for most of her life. By early 2003, MKIO's groundwork had been laid, and Jon and Natasha recruited Mark Nurre (guitar), Brian DiDomenico (keyboards), and Gordon Bash (bass) to complete the group.

Mankind is Obsolete's musical approach has been to stretch across a large spectrum of sound and dynamics within a rock context. Melodic and passionate, the music blends driving rhythms and expressive, rich vocals to create songs that are introspective, biographical and express observations of the world around. MKIO strives to create their music with conviction, intensity and ultimately to connect with their listeners.
The Band members include:
Leonard Brown from Chinle, Az on bass
Linford Yazzie from Sanders, Az on Rhythm and bass,
Harold Russell Jr from Kayenta, Az on Drums
Danny Francis from Chinle, Az on Drums

Harold Russell and the One-Ninety-One Band will be releasing their 9th CD the second week of February.

ONE NINETY ONE BAND
MKIO released their debut 6-song “Metamorph” EP in August 2003. The EP has proven itself to be as popular overseas as it is in the United States, as online buyers have purchased it and sent positive feedback to the group. Mankind is Obsolete produced a video for "The Rapture," a song off of the EP and is working on a new video for "Still Right Here," from the new album, "Rise," released June 2005.

Mankind is Obsolete prides itself on their DIY approach to music and promotion. Utilizing several grass-root promotional techniques, such as employing a worldwide street team, developing an online presence through MySpace and launching a 350 college station radio campaign in the US and Canada during 2005. The group has promoted itself through four self-organized tours within the past 2 years, which has helped to develop an ever-growing loyal fan base. MKIO has performed with many notable artists, including: KMFDM, Collide, Pigface, Free Dominguez, Genitorturers, and Beautiful Creatures. The group also performed at the 2005 Gothstock Festival in Connecticut, which featured the Genitorturers, Combichrist and Cruxshadows.

MKIO's current plans include a full US and Canada tour in summer 2006 to support the release of "Rise," produced by Gordon Bash. In addition, tracks from both albums will be featured in "Dimples," an upcoming Lion's Gate film. MKIO's tour this summer includes June 23rd at the Boardwalk in Flagstaff, and June 24th at the Big City in Farmington, NM.

Black Maria

Oh my Jewish god, it's Black Maria by a landslide. Seeing Black Maria live will change your conception of local music altogether; like smashing an 18-wheeler through a brick wall, high on speed, while receiving a superlative blow job. They're that good. Every other band in town gave themselves at least one vote, unlike Five Minute Sin ("they rock!!!"), Lousy Robot, Random Access Memory (RAM), Feels Like Sunday, Oktober People, Soular and of god and science, who actually had real fans voting for them.

Best Local Band Overall

Burning Bridges

At a time when the concept of artist development has all but disappeared from the music industry, Burning the Bridge is stepping into the scene with musical backgrounds as diverse as each individual. Comprised of five educated and experienced musicians who came through the other side of prior projects with their passion and dedication unscathed, the Arizona-based band has become a solid force. The chemistry was instant, and not only in the studio. They write music that they are all inspired by, and pass that on to the listener. There’s a mutual respect, and an energy that is its own driving force, sans the egos. There’s a certain feel to what’s happening, and people are responding to it.

Burning the Bridge is Tim Worth, Vocals; Sebastian Igasan, drums; Andrew Wadey, bass; Rafe Sweet and Brad (B-Lo) Lopez, lead guitars. The tandem guitar acts as two leads, indispensable and mind-blowing to experience. The guitar riffs are inseparable, with Rafe and B-Lo having been described as “the twin-ax attack”. They’re on a different level; it’s more like telepathy.

People don’t write songs like this anymore. Each song is different; you can’t label the style with just one. The mainstream structure is there, but you get a diverse set in every show. There’s a consistent signature, but you’ll never get the same thing twice. With interesting phrase changes throughout every song, listeners are continually transitioned into the unexpected.

The ultimate appeal of any piece of music comes down to its emotional impact and its effect in very human terms. When you listen to Burning the Bridge, you get a sense that you’re not alone. It’s life-affirming. The lyrics Worth writes are like the aftermath of a decision one way or the other. There’s a truth to what they’re singing about that gives it conviction. Worth only applies one criterion when writing his lyrics: “I want people to make their own decision. I try to get across that you’re not always told the truth, so don’t believe everything. But I don’t tell them a whole story; I want them to think about it. I believe they’ll get it, because most people can relate.” Worth’s vocals are cunning and catchy, sung with a rare clarity that is sharp, clear and infectious. He surprises you, taking you on a melodic journey from mellow to demanding, pulling you in as he commands the stage with uncontrived openness.

The origin of the name Burning the Bridge stems as much from the breakup of each member from their former bands as it does from the state of the world. It’s both personal and political. The lyrics span the chasm, from current affairs to personal relationships. Burning the Bridge is an open statement with more involved than just a surface satisfaction. There are deeper elements.

Rather than trying to fill a style, they let their influences guide them. Burning the Bridge stands apart from the rest because it flirts with every rock genre. The result can be a melodic rhythm or something heavy with tricky bass lines and drum modulation. The thing that makes Burning the Bridge exceptional is the solid underlying signature of their unique sound as they fuse one style with another; rock, jazz, heavy metal, pop rock, blues or samba. They are masters of their craft, with rock music so diverse it can’t be boxed-in by an industry label. This, combined with intelligent lyrics and an on-stage energy that leaves you inspired, has erased any audience barriers. It has drawn a phenomenal response from people of all musical preferences, which makes the fan base limitless and the music marketable on multiple formats.
“If we don’t hear something we want to hear, it’s our job to come up with it. For people who are always bitching that there’s nothing good going on…if there’s something you wanna hear or see, then you need to do it. Make it happen.” And it’s happening right now.
